The paintings arise from a dialogue between Eastern tradition and Western abstraction, where gesture becomes both language and emotion. Rooted in the discipline of Chinese calligraphy, Wu translates the rhythm of ink and brush into the expansive field of painting, allowing line and form to move beyond legibility into pure expression. Each mark holds the tension of intention and accident, meditation and release. Working primarily in acrylic and oil, Wu approaches the canvas as a living surface, an arena where energy accumulates through layers of motion. Color pulses like breath, strokes carve pathways of silence and eruption, and space opens to invite viewers into a state between recognition and abstraction. Wu is drawn to the physicality of painting as well as its capacity to hold memory, cultural inheritance, and the immediacy of the present. Immigrated to the States in 2013 from Shanghai, her practice is informed by her Shanghai upbringing and her life in the States, navigating identities that are both distant and intertwined. In merging the atmospheric freedom of Abstract Expressionism with the meditative rigor of calligraphy, she seeks to create works that resonate across cultures, paintings as visual poems, echoing the timeless rhythm of ink yet speaking in a contemporary voice.
